This operation, which is usually performed under spinal (epidural) or general anesthesia, takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the number of hemorrhoids, their location and the surgical method applied.

Who Are The Eligible Candidates For Hemorrhoids Surgery?

The cause of hemorrhoids cannot be fully explained, but the causes are seen as hereditary predisposition, constipation, excessive straining, age, diarrhea, alcohol, standing or sitting for long periods of time, and excessive consumption of spicy food.

General symptoms include pain and itching around the anus, bleeding, hard tissues that can be felt by hand, and swelling in the anus area.

Hemorrhoids have 4 stages and their symptoms vary according to their stages.

Stage 1 hemorrhoids are the stage in which bleeding occurs enough to contaminate the toilet. Stage 2 hemorrhoids protrude with the stool and then reenter. Stage 3 hemorrhoids are external and can be pushed in with the finger. Pain and swellings are observed in this stage. In stage 4 hemorrhoids, the hemorrhoids have completely prolapsed and difficulty in sitting and pain are observed.

Individuals with the above symptoms and diagnosis are deemed suitable for hemorrhoid surgery. Also, surgery is recommended for individuals if medication treatment does not provide results.

How Is The Hemorrhoids Surgery Performed?

There are different methods of hemorrhoid surgery depending on the number, location and severity of hemorrhoids. This surgical intervention, which is usually performed under spinal (epidural) or general anesthesia, takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

      PREPARATION

It is important to have physical examination. According to the physical examination the surgery will be planned. After the planning of surgery, there are some pre-operative examinations such as learning of patient’s medical record, blood tests, Chest X-ray, colonoscopy and anesthesiologist consultation.
According to the patient’s medical record, surgeon may ask for additional tests and examinations from different branches.
The main aims of pre-operative examinations are evaluate the patient’s risk and maitain patient’s health condition.

      ANESTHESIA

Spinal (epidural) anesthesia which is numbing the lower body from waist is preffered generally. When spinal anesthesia cannot be applied, general anesthesia which is is numbing whole body and put patients to sleep is also preferred.

      HEMORRHOIDS SURGERY TECHNIQUES

The surgery method varies depending on the stage, location and multiplicity of hemorrhoids.
 Laser hemorrhoid surgery is generally a preferred surgical method for stage 1 and 2 hemorrhoids. During this surgery, the inside of the anus is viewed with an anoscope. Hemorrhoids are detected and the laser needle is pushed towards the root of the hemorrhoid nozzles. In this way, hemorrhoid nozzles are ensured to disappear. This procedure is the less invasive type of hemorrhoid surgery.
 The ligasure stitchless surgery method is performed with a special surgical instrument called ligasure. It is used to treat stage 3 and 4 internal and external hemorrhoids. The device called Ligasure is a sealing device. Thus, hemorrhoids are sealed. In this method, bleeding is minimal and there is no need for stitches.
 Hemorrhoidal artery ligation is the most preferred method. It is applied for 1st stage,2nd stage, 3rd stage and stage 4 hemorrhoids. In this surgery, a special medical device is used to reduce blood flow to the blood vessels in the anal area. Then, the vessels feeding the hemorrhoids are connected using a method called ligation. Hemorrhoids that cannot be nourished begin to shrink and symptoms improve.
 De Longo (Stapler) method is preferred for stage 2 and stage 3 hemorrhoids. Stapler is a surgical material used for cutting and joining. In this surgery, circular tissue excision is performed 4 to 5 cm above the anal entrance. In this way, the sagging hemorrhoid tissue is pulled up. In this method, since the integrity of the vessels feeding hemorrhoids is disrupted, internal and external hemorrhoids begin to shrink over time.
 Classical hemorrhoidectomy is preferred for stage 3 and stage 4 hemorrhoids. It is the process of removing hemorrhoids with surgical materials such as scalpel, cautery and scissors.
