This surgery, performed under general anesthesia, usually takes 1 to 3 hours, depending on the amount of fibroid tumors removed. There are three different methods of this surgery: Abdominal Myomectomy, Laparoscopic Myomectomy and Hysteroscopic Myomectomy.

Who Are The Eligible Candidates For The Myomectomy?

Myomas are benign tumors that generally grow in the uterus during childbearing age. However, in some cases, they may need to be removed by surgical intervention.

Situations that require surgical intervention are generally due to myoma-related long-lasting painful menstrual bleeding and anemia, frequent urination, constipation, waist and inguinal pain, myomas causing fertility problems, people wanting to have children, and individuals not wanting to have their uterus removed.

Individuals are deemed suitable for surgery in cases where their daily activities and fertility are affected.

      How Is The Myomectomy Performed?

Myomectomy is a surgical intervention that involves removing fibroids and rearranging the uterus, which affects individuals' daily lives and fertility. This procedure, performed under general anesthesia, may take between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the myoma.

      PREPARATION

First, physical examination is very important. During the physical examination, the doctor measures the size of the myoma or fibroids and determines their location. The surgery method is determined according to the size and location of the myoma. The second most important step after the physical examination is to learn the patient's anamnesis (medical record). The following pre-operative examinations and consultations are such as Blood tests, ECG (Electrocardiography), Chest X-ray, Ultrasound and anesthesia consultation.
According to the patient’s medical record, doctor may ask for additionaly examination and consultation from different branches.
The main aims of the pre-operative tests and consultations are evaluate to patient’s risk and maintain patient’s health condition.

      ANESTHESIA

Hysterectomy operation is performed under the general anesthesia which is numbing the whole body and the patient is completely put to sleep.

      MYOMECTOMY TECHNIQUES

There are 3 surgical methods for myomectomy surgery. The surgery method is decided upon physical examination according to the size of the myomas and their location.
In abdominal myomectomy, an incision similar to a cesarean section is made in the area known as the bikini line. In individuals with a large uterus, a vertical incision can usually be made from the belly button to the abdomen. Myomas are removed from the incision and the surgery is completed by suturing the incision area.
In laparoscopic myomectomy, 3 to 4 small incisions are made. A laparoscope, which is a thin tube with a camera at the end, and other surgical equipment are entered through these incisions. Myomas are removed removed through small incisions. After the myomas are removed, the incisions are stitched and the surgery is completed. It is a less invasive surgical intervention than open myomtectomy surgery.
Hysteroscopic myomectomy is generally the preferred surgical method for small myomas. It is performed with a lighted surgical instrument inserted through the vagina. First, sterile water is poured to facilitate examination of the uterine walls. Then, the fibroids in the uterus are broken down and removed from the vagina. The operation is terminated after the removal process is completed. There is no incision in this method.

      Recovery From Myomectomy In Turkey

Depending on the surgery method, patients usually stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights.

While the recovery period is 2 to 4 weeks after laparoscopic surgeries; in open surgeries, it is 4 to 6 weeks. Generally stitches will be removed between 3 or 10 days or dissolvable stitches are placed.

Patients are generally advised to get plenty of rest after surgery and move in a way that does not tire them out. It is important that patients do not lift heavy objects and avoid sexual activity for 6 weeks after the surgery.

Depending on the applied surgical method, patients can return to work within 1 to 3 weeks.

It should not be forgotten that it may take 3 to 4 months for the uterus to return to its own state.
