Undescended testicle (or cryptorchidism) is a condition where the testicles are not in the scrotum (testicle sac) where they are normally located. Testicles usually descend from the abdomen into the scrotum a few weeks before birth. If this descent does not occur, the testicles may remain in the abdomen or in the inguinal canal.Undescended testicle is commonly observed in infants.

This surgery is performed to position the testicles correctly into the scrotum and to prevent long-term health issues. In this case Orchiopexy surgery  is carried out under general anesthesia, and it typically takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

WHEN IS UNDESCENDED TESTICLE (CRYPTORCHIDISM) SURGERY CONDUCTED?

Symptoms of an undescended testicle include the absence of the testicle in the scrotum, the presence of the testicle in the inguinal area or abdomen, swelling and pain, asymmetry, and a small testicle. If left untreated, this condition can lead to aesthetic issues, sexual dysfunction, and an increased risk of testicular cancer. Therefore, surgical intervention is recommended. The most suitable candidates for the surgery are male infants aged 6 to 12 months, during the growth period.

HOW IS UNDESCENDED TESTICLE (CRYPTORCHIDISM) SURGERY PERFORMED?

      PREPARATION

The most crucial part before the surgery is the physical examination. Following the physical exam, preoperative assessments include blood tests, urine tests, imaging tests (such as ultrasound and MRI), psychological evaluation, medical history reviewing, general health assessment and an anesthesia consultation.

Extra tests could be required to be conducted in case patient has any other existing or underlying medical condition.
We endevaour to evaluate all possible risk factors by carefully dissecting all individual biological and clinical parameters in terms of conducting wide range of tests and gathering all records pertaining patients past medical and current conditions.

      ANESTHESIA

General anesthesia is the most common types of anesthesia is applied for this surgery.

      UNDESCENDED TESTICLE (CRYPTORCHIDISM) SURGERY TECHNIQUE

Orchiopexy surgery is performed to reposition undescended testicles into their proper location. The surgery begins with an incision made either in the inguinal region or the scrotum. Once the incision is made, the location of the testicles is determined, and the testicles are placed into the scrotum while preserving the surrounding blood vessels and nerves. To secure the testicles in the scrotum, orchiopexy is performed, typically using stitches. Dissolvable stitches are commonly used. After the necessary checks are completed, the wound is dressed, and the procedure is completed.

RECOVERY FROM UNDESCENDED TESTICLE (CRYPTHORCHIDISM) SURGERY IN TURKEY

Typically, one night is spent in the hospital after the surgery. Postoperative pain and discomfort are common. Pain can be managed with painkillers, and antibiotic treatment is started to prevent infection. Dressings applied to the surgical area remain in place for several days and are removed by the doctor. Swelling and bruising may occur during the first week of recovery. This usually resolves on its own within a few days, and cold compresses can be used to alleviate swelling. As dissolvable stitches are used, they do not need to be removed by the doctor. Although it varies from person to person, full recovery generally takes between 4 to 6 weeks.
