Vesicoureteral reflux is a condition where urine flows back from the bladder into the ureters and sometimes even into the kidneys. This occurs when there is a problem at the junction where the ureter connects to the bladder. It is a condition that is commonly seen in children.

In children with severe symptoms, vesicoureteral reflux surgery is performed. This procedure, which can be done either laparoscopically or through open surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes between 1 to 3 hours to complete.

WHEN IS VESICOURETERAL REFLUX SURGERY PERFORMED?

In newborns and infants, as well as in childhood (especially in girls), common causes of vesicoureteral reflux include ureteral valve dysfunction, abnormal ureteral structure, increased bladder pressure, urinary tract infections, and a family history of vesicoureteral reflux. Symptoms of this condition include recurrent urinary tract infections, painful urination, frequent urination, abdominal pain and vomiting, fever, and slow growth. If left untreated, vesicoureteral reflux can lead to urinary tract infections, kidney damage, and other complications. In children with severe symptoms and advanced cases of the condition, surgical intervention is used.

HOW IS VESICOURETERAL REFLUX SURGERY PERFORMED?

Vesicoureteral reflux is a condition where urine flows back from the bladder into the ureters. Surgical intervention is performed to prevent urine from flowing back into the ureters and kidneys, as well as to prevent urinary tract infections and kidney damage. This surgical procedure can be performed using either laparoscopic or open methods and is carried out under general anesthesia. Depending on the surgical approach, the procedure typically lasts between 1 to 3 hours.

      Preparation

Before the surgical procedure, the most important step is the physical examination. Following the physical examination, preoperative preparation includes gathering the patient’s medical history, assessing their overall health, learning about the family medical history, performing blood tests, urine analysis and urine culture tests, ultrasound, Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG), Nuclear Scintigraphy (DMSA or MAG3), and an anesthesia consultation.

Extra tests could be required to be conducted in case patient has any other existing or underlying medical condition.

We endevaour to evaluate all possible risk factors by carefully dissecting all individual biological and clinical parameters in terms of conducting wide range of tests and gathering all records pertaining patients past medical and current conditions.

      Type of Anaesthesia

General anesthesia is the most common types of anesthesia for Vesicoureteral Reflux Surgery.

      Techniques of Vesicoureteral Reflux Surgery

Vesicoureteral reflux surgery can be performed using either a laparoscopic (minimally invasive) or open method. The choice of surgical technique is determined by the doctor based on preoperative findings and the results of the physical examination.

In laparoscopic vesicoureteral reflux surgery, the procedure is performed through minimal incisions using a trocar, laparoscope, and other surgical instruments. First, the area of reflux is examined, and the ureter is repositioned back onto the bladder wall to address the condition. If necessary, a pledget may be used to strengthen the connection between the bladder and the ureter.

In open surgery for vesicoureteral reflux, the patient lies on their back, and the procedure begins with an incision made in the lower abdominal area. As in the laparoscopic method, the bladder, ureters, and area of reflux are examined. The ureter is repaired, and a pledget may be used if necessary. After performing the required checks, the incision is closed with stitches, and the procedure is completed.

RECOVERY PROCESS WITH VESICOURETERAL REFLUX SURGERY

After the surgery, the hospital stay typically ranges from 1 to 3 days. A catheter is placed after both surgical methods and is removed before discharge from the hospital. Patients are advised to rest for a few weeks after discharge, avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous physical activities. It is common to experience pain and swelling at the surgery site; the swelling usually decreases on its own within a few days, while pain management is provided with pain medications. Urination habits may be affected for a period after the surgery, and a return to normal urination patterns typically takes a few weeks. While recovery time can vary from person to person, the overall healing process usually lasts between 6 to 8 weeks.
