Cancer cells are malignant cells that grow and spread rapidly, damaging healthy tissues. Radiotherapy treatment can be applied to some patients diagnosed with cancer especially conducted as primary treatment in individuals diagnosed with lymphoma and head and neck cancers.

Radiotherapy treatment is the direct application of high doses of electromagnetic frequency ultraviolet X-rays to cancer tissues. It can be applied directly from outside the body, or sometimes it can be applied into the tissue with chemicals introduced into the bloodstream. The treatment period lasts from 3 to 9 weeks. The treatment, which is performed in 5 sessions every week, takes 15-20 minutes.

      When Is Radiotherapy Treatment Conducted?

Radiotherapy cannot be perormed on every cancer patient. Individuals are evaluated by physicians in terms of the type of cancer, its stage and other ongoing treatment that are being conducted. The types of cancer for which radiotherapy is mostly conducted is Hodgkin Lymphoma, andsome lung cancers, prostate cancer, throat cancer, cervical cancer and rectal cancer. Since these types of cancer are sensitive to radiation, radiotherapy can be performed instead.

Radiotherapy is used to shrink the tumor before surgery, to prevent tumor recurrence after surgery, as primary treatment alone or in combination with chemotherapy, and to reduce the symptoms of cancerous cells.

How Is Radiotherapy Treatment Performed In Turkey?

Radiation therapy is used as primary treatment in types of cancer that are sensitive to radiation. Types of cancer that are sensitive to radiation are lymphoma, some lung cancers, prostate cancer, throat cancer, cervical cancer, and rectal cancer. Radiotherapy entails using high energy rays for treatment purposes. Ionizing rays damage the DNA of cancer cells. Meanwhile, the radiation also damages healthy tissues, but while cancer cells cannot repair the damage they receive, healthy tissues successfully repair the damage they receive. For this reason, it is a treatment that can be applied safely to patients.

      PREPARATION

Computed tomography (CT Scan) is taken before radiotherapy. In this way, the area of the cancer is determined. PET-Scan is performed to determine the spread of the tumor and the areas where it has spread. After these tests are performed, the results are evaluated by the doctor hence the radiation dose, radiation source is determined accordingly.

      RADIOTHERAPY TECHNIQUE

Radiotherapy is mainly used for therapeutic purposes or to reduce symptoms in certain types of cancer. It can be applied in two different ways; externally and internally (Brachytherapy).

External Radiotherapy; In most patients, radiotherapy is applied externally. It is performed using radiotherapy devices in treatment centers and polyclinics. In external radiation therapy, the radiation machine moves around the body without touching the individual and radiation is sent to the cancerous area. In this treatment, different radiation producing devices are used, including medium voltage X-ray machines, Cobalt 60 machines, linear accelerators, proton beam machines and neutron beam machines. The radiation machine to be used is determined by the doctor according to the individual and the cancer and its spread. External radiation therapy is administered as an outpatient treatment for 5 sessions per week. Each session lasts 10 to 20 minutes.

Internal Radiotherapy (Brachytherapy); In this treatment method, catheters or applicators are placed to deliver radiation to the area where the cancer is located. This treatment is done under anesthesia, and some patients may be hospitalized. In individuals who are not hospitalized, the applicators are reinserted at each session. In this method, the cancerous tissue is directly targeted and radiation is delivered to the cancerous tissue. Other tissues are exposed to less radiation. More radiation can be given to cancerous tissues. It is especially preferred in prostate and some types of gynecological cancer.

What Are The Things Patient Should Pay Attention To After The Treatment?

After radiotherapy, individuals should wash the treatment areas with warm water and mild soap. Likewise, they should do the drying calmly using soft towels. They should take care to moisturize the treatment area or areas. The use of clothing that will create friction in the treatment area should be avoided. Patients will be asked to maintain their weight throughout the treatment period. They may experience a decrease in appetite, in which case a protein-based diet is recommended. Individuals should also protect themselves from the sun, using sunscreen with SPF 30 or 50. Oral sores may occur. For this reason, it is important for them to brush their teeth with soft toothbrushes after meals to prevent oral wounds. It is essential for individuals and those around them to stay away from stress and negative thoughts.
