This surgery is performed to treat calluses and ulcers on the bottom of the foot and in metatarsal fractures.
Metatarsal surgery, which takes approximately 1 to 3 hours depending on the fracture’s severity under general or spinal anesthesia, is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce metatarsal fractures’ pain and correct the deformity it causes.

Who Are The Eligible Candidates For Metatarsal Operation?

Metatarsal fractures can occur in any individual, but they are more likely to occur in individuals who are involved in sports such as workers with high activity levels, dancers, and football players. Individuals who have pain and bruising in their feet due to an impact are deemed suitable for surgery based on surgical examination and X-ray. The type of fracture most suitable for metatarsal surgery is Jones. Since bone healing cannot occur without surgery in these fractures (Jones Fractures), surgery is recommended for individuals.

How Is The Metatarsal Surgery Procedure Performed?

Generally, metatarsal surgery is performed through an incision made on the metatarsal bone behind the toe. When the operation is planned, the other step is learning of the patient’s medical record and the following pre-operative steps are blood tests, ECG (Electrocardiography), X-Ray and anesthesiologist consultation.
The pre-operative tests and consultations’ main aims are evaluate the patient’s risk and maintain the patient’s health.

      ANESTHESIA

Generally, the spinal (epidural) anesthesia which is numbing the lower body from the waist is performed fort his surgery. However, according to the patients’ pre-operative tests’ result and ansthesiologist consultation general anesthesia can be also prefferred.

      METATARSAL SURGERY TECHNIQUE

After anesthesia is applied, an incision is made on the damaged metatarsal bone and the metatarsal bone is cut. In this surgery, the metatarsal bone is elevated for repositioning; The repositioned metatarsal bone is fixed with screws and pins. In some cases, ulcers and calluses on the feet are also treated. Once the metatarsal bone is repositioned and fixed, the incisions are stitched and dressings are applied. The surgery is completed after stitching and dressing the incisions.
