The prostate is part of the male reproductive system. It is located at the bottom of the bladder around the urethra. It is responsible for semen production and sperm protection. Depending on age, enlargement, mass and infection may occur in the prostate gland. It may cause serious complaints in male individuals. In this case, surgical intervention is required.

Prostate surgery is performed in two methods, open and laparoscopic (closed), depending on the condition of the prostate and the complaints. This intervention, performed under general anesthesia, lasts between 2 and 3 hours.

Who Are The Eligible Candidates For Prostate Surgery?

Prostate enlargement develops with age. As it grows, it begins to compress the urinary canals. Due to this compression, the bladder muscles expand and over time the muscles begin to tire. Thus, problems with urination begin.

Individuals with symptoms such as pain, burning and bleeding during urination, intermittent or scanty urination, increased need to urinate at night, urinary incontinence, still feeling the need to urinate after urinating, and sexual dysfunction are deemed suitable for surgery after examination.

How Is The Prostate Surgery Performed?

There are two methods of performing prostate surgery: laparoscopic (closed) and open. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes between 2 and 3 hours.

      PREPARATION

It is important for individuals with complaints to first undergo a physical examination. According to the physical examination, the operation is planned. After the planning of the operation surgeon may ask some pre-operative tests. First step is learning the patient’s medical record. The following steps as pre-operative tests are such as Blood Tests, Chest X-ray, ECG (Electorcardiography), uroflowmetry, abdominal and rectal ultrasound. In some cases surgeon may ask for additional tests from different branches.
Main aims of pre-operative tests are evaluate the patient’s risk and maintain the patient’s health condition.

      ANESTHESIA

This surgery is performed under general anesthesia which is numbing the whole body and put patients to sleep.

      PROSTATE SURGERY TECHNIQUES

Prostate surgery is a surgical procedure performed to correct problems such as inability to urinate, urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction due to enlargement of the prostate gland.
In the laparoscopic (closed) method, no incision is usually made and the urinary tract is accessed through the penis hole. Parts of the prostate are removed. However, this is not a procedure performed with incisions. Using methods such as laser, radiofrequency or ultrasound, the enlarged prostate tissue is evaporated and reduced in size. If prostate surgery is performed for cancer, small incisions of 8-12 mm are made in the lower part of the abdomen. Surgical instruments are inserted through these incisions and cancerous tissue is removed. After completing the surgical procedure, the opened incisions are stitched up and the surgery is terminated
In the open method, this method is also called prostatectomy, a 10 cm horizontal incision is made in the lower part of the abdomen. In this method, a certain part or all of the prostate gland is usually removed. Open surgery is preferred after the prostate gland is over 80 ml or diagnosed with prostate cancer. After the surgical procedure is completed, the incisions are stitched and the surgery is terminated.

Recovery From Prostate Surgery In Turkey

After prostate surgery, patients stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days. During this 3-day period, patients have a catheter. The catheter is usually removed after 3 days and patients are discharged after urinating for the first time.

It is recommended to get plenty of rest and avoid heavy work during the recovery period. During this period, it is quite normal to experience urinary incontinence and bleeding when coughing and sneezing. Patients should consume plenty of fluids to cleanse the urinary tract. And patients should do urinary tract strengthening exercises as explained by their doctors.

While the recovery period lasts 7 to 10 days in closed surgery, it may take 6 weeks or a little longer in open surgery. However total healing may be seen in 6 months after the open surgery.
