Cancer is a disease that occurs as a result of uncontrolled proliferation and growth of cells in any organ or tissue of the body. Cryoablation therapy has been long been accepted as viable treatment protocol for cancer treatment. Cryoablation therapy is the destruction of cancer by freezing it. It is generally used in the treatment of bone cancer, cervical cancer, eye cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer.

Cryoablation (freezing) treatment is a 30-minute procedure performed with a needle (cryoprobe) under local anesthesia.

      When Is Cryoablation Treatment Conducted?

Cryoablation treatment is preferred in lung, pancreas, muscle, bone marrow, breast, soft tissue, kidney, liver, prostate and cervix cancers. It is generally preferred for cancers that are in their early stages, small in size, not suitable for surgery and have not metastasized. Other reasons for it to be a preferred means of treatment is that there is less urinatry incontinence being experienced in cases of prostrate cancer, and it could be considered as an alternative to surgical intvention in cases where a rebound of cancer is registered, especially for individuals who have previously received radiotherapy and chemotherapy but have relapsed from cancer, and individuals whose advanced age and general health making them unfit to have surgery.

How Is Cryoablation Treatment Performed In Turkey?

It aims to destroy cancer cells by freezing them with the help of a cryoprobe (needle). Cancer cells are destroyed by freezing at -20 to -80 degrees. This procedure, performed under local anesthesia, takes between 15 and 30 minutes. After this procedure, patients are called for control once or twice, and the treatment can be repeated depending on the condition of the cells.

      PREPARATION

It is important for patients to undergo a number of tests before cryoablation treatment. These tests include computed tomography (CT Scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and PET scan. In this way, areas where cancer is present and areas of spread are detected. Since it is a procedure performed under local anesthesia, individuals must also undergo anesthesia consultation, ECG (Electrocardiography) and chest x-ray scans woul have to be taken as part of the assesment process.

      ANESTHESIA

Local anesthesia / twilight sedations could be administed fort he cryoablation.

      CRYOABLAYION TECHNIQUE

It is performed with special needles. The number of needles to be applied increases depending on the size of the masses or mass. Today, 20-25 needles can be inserted into the body during this treatment. In this procedure, ultrasound, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging is used to ensure that the needles are placed correctly and precisely to the right part of the tumor. With the help of this imaging technique, needles are placed on the right regions. The tip of the needles contains nitrogen or argon gas. These cold gases are transferred to the tumor from the tip of the needle. Thus, freezing is performed by creating a cold temperature between -20 and -80 in the tumor tissues.Frozen tissues turn into ice balls. The cells that turn into ice balls melt after the procedure and are absorbed by the body. It is among the non-invasive cancer treatments.

What Are The Things Patient Should Pay Attention To After The Treatment?

Since this procedure is non-invasive, recovery time after the procedure is fast. Generally, patients are discharged on the same day. Among the things that patients should pay attention to after this procedure are ; drinking plenty of fluids, using medications prescribed by the doctor, and attending regular doctor checks and scans. Cryoablation therapy is an effective and long-term survival treatment option. It is very important for patients to pay attention to their nutrition after treatment, and to incorporate a balanced nutrition program in their lives. Adopting an active life style, enhaging with hobbies can increase the chances of the treatment to be successfull.
