Appendicitis is a part of the caecum, 5 to 6 cm long and 3 mm in diameter, located at the beginning of the large intestine. Appendicitis is important for body immunity. In some cases, it becomes inflamed and causes serious symptoms.
Appendectomy surgery is the process of removing appendicitis from the body. It takes 30 minutes to 1 hour under general anesthesia.

Who Are The Eligible Candidates For Appendectomy?

The most important cause of appendicitis is the obstruction of the caecum lumen located between the small intestine and the large intestine.

Appendicitis usually causes symptoms such as pain in the right inguinal, loss of appetite, dry mouth and tongue, constipation or persistent diarrhea, inability to pass gas, fever and increased heart rate.

Every individual with suspicion, symptoms and diagnosis of appendicitis is suitable for this operation.

      How Is Appendectomy Performed?

It is the process of removing the inflamed appendicitis from the body. There are two methods of performing appendectomy: open and laparoscopic (closed). It takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour under general anesthesia.

      PREPARATION

The first thing is physical examination. According to the symptoms and physical examination’s finding the surgery is planned. After the planning of surgery, there are some pre-operative tests and examination such as learning of patient’s medical record, blood tests, ECG (Electrocardiography), Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT Scan) and anesthesiologist consultation.

      ANESTHESIA

General anesthesia is preffered for the appendectomy which is numbing whole body and put patients to sleep.

      APPENDECTOMY TECHNIQUE

There are two methods of appendectomy. The method to be applied is decided according to the condition of appendicitis.
In the laparoscopic appendectomy, this method is generally preferred. After anesthesia is applied, 4 small incisions are made on the abdomen. A laparoscope (flexible tube with a camera) and other surgical materials are inserted through these incisions. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas and comfortable movement space is provided within the abdomen. The appendix is then separated and removed through an incision. After the stitching of incisions, surgery is completed.
Open appendectomy is performed if the appendix has burst or if the patient has previously had open abdominal surgery. An incision of 5 to 10 cm is made in the area where appendicitis is located in the right inguinal. The appendix is removed and the abdominal cavity is cleaned. After the appendix is removed, the incisions are stitched and the surgery is completed.

      Recovery From Appendectomy In Turkey

After the laparoscopic operation, patients stay at the hospital for 1 or 2 days. If they had an open appendectomy, and if peritonitis was occured, patients stay at the hospital for 1 week.

In both surgical methods, stitches that can be dissolved or need to be removed after 7 to 10 days may be used. Swelling and bruising may be observed in the treated areas, this is normal. Generally, patients can return to their normal lives within 10 days. However, after the surgery, they should rest well and dress as the doctor tells them.

Recovery time takes between 1 and 3 weeks, depending on the surgery method.
