Coronary artery disease occurs due to decreased or complete cessation of blood flow as a result of narrowing or blockage of the arteries called coronary arteries that feed the heart muscle. Causes of coronary artery disease include diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sedentary lifestyle, and heavy smoking. Essentially, as a result of the accumulation of cholesterol and other cells on the vascular walls, formations known as “plaque” occur and atherosclerosis, also known as arteriosclerosis, occurs. When these plaques that form on the vascular walls lose their flexibility, they begin to slow down the blood flow within the vessels and cannot carry enough oxygen that the heart muscle needs. Thus, as less oxygen reaches the heart, heart muscle cells die. This cell loss in heart muscle cells causes heart attack, embolic diseases due to loss of heart muscle function, and other serious health problems that can result in death. For this reason, coronary artery disease must be treated.

In coronary artery disease, stent placement treatment is applied to the blocked vessel along with angiography. These stents can be used with or without medication to keep the vein open. There has been a groundbreaking development in stents placed in the coronary artery in Turkey. This specially designed new generation stent is placed in the balloon at the end of the guide wire and placed in the occluded vessel, as in normal stent placement. When the correct vein is reached, the balloon is inflated and embedded in the vein wall. The balloon is then deflated and the stent is attached to the vein. The stent is attached to the vessel and creates a bulge in the vessel. This placed stent dissolves the existing plaque in the vein by releasing sirolimus in a controlled manner for approximately eight weeks, preventing the formation of new plaques. This new generation stent developed in Turkey, which consists of polymer layers that can later spontaneously decompose from the body, is used very successfully in difficult cases.
