Pediatry scoliosis, also known as spinal curvature surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical technique that aims to correct scoliosis with smaller incisions, leading to less pain and quicker recovery. Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways, forming an S or C shape. While the spine naturally curves forward and backward, it should not curve sideways. In scoliosis, the spine may curve to the right, left, or in both directions, leading to visible and physical symptoms such as a tilted body posture, uneven shoulders or waits, misaligned head, hips, or shoulder blades or asymmetry in the ribs.
Scoliosis may occur in one or more of its three main sections namely: cervical spine (neck) which affects the uppermost portion of the spine, thoracic spine (chest and upper back) which affects the middle section that supports the rib cage, or the lumbar spine (lower back) which affects the lower section that is responsible for supporting much of the body’s weight. In some cases, scoliosis can affect multiple sections of the spine simultaneously.
Pediatry scoliosis can be categorized into four types: idiopathic scoliosis, curvature with no cause, congenital scoliosis which is present at birth due to asymmetrical or incompletely formed vertebrae, neuromuscular scoliosis which is linked to conditions like celebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or spina bifida, and syndromic scoliosis which is associated with syndromes such as Marfan’s, Ehlers-Danlos, or osteogenesis imperfect.
For cases where braces, physical therapy, or casting cannot control the condition, surgery becomes the most effective option. At Prospero Medical, our orthopedic spine surgeons specialize in treating children and adolescents with severe scoliosis, particularly when the spinal curvatures exceed 50 degrees. The goal of the surgery is to safely straighten the spine, aligning the shoulders and hips, and improving your child’s posture for better quality of life.
